Scouts Take to the Waves: A Thrilling Sailing Weekend at Llyn Brenig

A Weekend of Wind and Waves

On the 13th and 14th of May, the Scouts of 1st Bistre put their nautical skills to the test in a weekend of sailing at the beautiful Llyn Brenig. With a total of 15 Scouts participating, this two-day adventure was packed with learning, fun, and the opportunity to earn nationally recognised awards.

Setting Sail: The Journey Begins

For many of our Scouts, this was their first opportunity to helm a dinghy and understand the power of wind and currents. Whether complete beginners or slightly more experienced sailors looking to refine their skills, all had the chance to work towards not just Scout Staged Badges (like Sailing and Nautical Skills), but also prestigious awards from the Royal Yachting Association (RYA).

Achievements on the Horizon

The youngsters exhibited a commendable enthusiasm for learning and perseverance in the face of challenge, qualities that embody the Scouting spirit. Many were successful in earning their sailing badges and even achieved RYA Level 1 certification, with eyes set on Level 2 for the next time.

Confidence on the Crest of a Wave

The real highlight of the weekend, however, was witnessing the transformative growth in the Scouts’ confidence. A standout moment featured Zach, a non-swimmer, who by the end of Day 1 was navigating the waters with commendable confidence.

This triumphant story exemplifies the personal growth and self-assuredness Scouting promotes.

Testimonials: Voices from the Voyage

Their achievements didn’t go unnoticed. The feedback from our Scouts, their leaders, and parents has been overwhelmingly positive.

Keast, one of our Scouts, recounts,“I really enjoyed sailing- I’d never done it before & found it a great challenge. Even capsizing was fun! Plus, I earned a badge.”

A leader and parent of Keast adds, “Keast thoroughly enjoyed his sailing experience. Following expert guidance and instruction, he gained confidence on the water and sailed independently; a huge achievement for a young novice.”

The praise extends beyond our Scout group. Parents of our sailors have been overjoyed with the experience.

One parent lauded, “Loved it! Fab value for money and such a great experience for Maisie! Maisie got so much out of the weekend and is still talking about it now! Can’t wait to do the next weekend! Xx”

This unforgettable sailing weekend encapsulates what Scouting at 1st Bistre is all about – embracing challenges, learning new skills, building friendships, and creating memories. We can’t wait to see our Scouts ride the winds on their next sailing adventure!
